Bow Hunting From the Ground

Bow hunting from the ground is an often overlooked yet highly effective strategy.

When most people think of archery hunting, they envision sitting high up in an elevated platform, waiting for their quarry to pass by. While this is the most common practice, it’s not the only option.

During the early season, whether hunting whitetails or black bears, staying mobile and constantly on the lookout for fresh sign is crucial. In my experience, carrying a cumbersome treestand on my back through the dense September foliage makes it challenging to cover a lot of ground while remaining stealthy. Tree saddles and other lightweight options have made a comeback, and while I acknowledge their advantages, the most minimalist and traditional approach is hunting from the forest floor.

Terrain can be your friend when hunting from the ground. The edge of a ridge or on top of a large rock above a hot feed tree provides a naturally elevated position without the added weight of a treestand.

This tactic has proven successful for me multiple times, likely because I’m willing to cover more ground and find a suitable spot to sit when I don’t have to carry unnecessary equipment. I encourage you to give bow hunting from the ground a try this coming fall. Embrace a new challenge and discover the joy it can bring.
